Matt Pillar, an accomplished business
development, marketing, and sales executive; investor; and strategic advisor, has spent more than a decade living and working in Greater China within the past twenty-three years,
where he specializes in creating, staffing, and executing growth strategies for a variety of consumer brands and businesses, particularly those interested in penetrating the
burgeoning Asian markets.
From 2009 to 2010, Matt relocated to Beijing, China to establish regional operations for Catalytic Capital Asia-Pacific. He is currently leading the development
and implementation of a multi-faceted China market growth strategy and tactical plan of action for BabyCenter, a member of the Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) family of companies,
and serves as an ongoing consultant to Harvard Business School on a number of the university's initiatives related to entrepreneurial management in Greater China. In October 2011,
he helped to facilitate the university's inaugural executive education program on Families in Business - China at the Harvard Center Shanghai.
Prior to Catalytic Capital Asia-Pacific, Matt served as Vice President of Emerging Business Acquisitions at The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS). In this role,
he identified, negotiated, and managed the acquisition of a number of promising, early stage consumer-facing, content-based entertainment and media businesses. In 2003, he co-founded
and has since served as Managing Partner at Catalytic Capital. Previously, Matt was the principal digital media analyst at Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures, where he initiated
and evaluated more than $600 million of investments and managed Vulcan's $300 million "fund of funds" portfolio. From 1990 to 1997, Matt lived in Hong Kong where he served as a founding
sales, marketing, and business development executive for noted entrepreneur Richard Li at STAR TV, Pacific Century Corporate Access, and Pacific Century Group in Southeast Asia, China, and India.
Matt has served on the Boards of Directors of a number of leading-edge digital media companies and currently serves on the Board of Overseers of From the Top and on the Board of
Trustees of the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House, two non-profit organizations.
Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Matt graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in East Asian Studies from Brown University; completed a rigorous course of study at
Nanjing University in Nanjing, China; and received a Master in Business Administration degree with Honors from Harvard University, where case studies and lecture material that he co-authored
and published are taught in both the Harvard Business School executive education program and second-year MBA curriculum.
